Efficient spin injection and giant magnetoresistance in Fe/MoS2/Fe junctions

چکیده
We demonstrate giant magnetoresistance in Fe/MoS2/Fe junctions by means of ab initio transport calculations. We show that junctions incorporating either a monolayer or a bilayer of MoS2 are metallic and that Fe acts as an efficient spin injector into MoS2 with an efficiency of about 45%. This is the result of the strong coupling between the Fe and S atoms at the interface. For junctions of greater thickness, a maximum magnetoresistance of ∼300% is obtained, which remains robust with the applied bias as long as transport is in the tunneling limit. A general recipe for improving the magnetoresistance in spin valves incorporating layered transition metal dichalcogenides is proposed.

We present ab initio calculations of the spin-dependent electronic transport in Fe/GaAs/Fe and Fe/ZnSe/Fe ~001! junctions simulating the situation of a spin-injection experiment. We follow a ballistic Landauer-Büttiker approach for the calculation of the spin-dependent dc conductance in the linear-response regime, in the limit of zero temperature. We show that the bulk band structure of the lea...
متن کاملReversal of spin polarization in Fe/GaAs (001) driven by resonant surface states: first-principles calculations.
A minority-spin resonant state at the Fe/GaAs(001) interface is predicted to reverse the spin polarization with the voltage bias of electrons transmitted across this interface. Using a Green's function approach within the local spin-density approximation, we calculate the spin-dependent current in a Fe/GaAs/Cu tunnel junction as a function of the applied bias voltage. We find a change in sign o...
متن کاملSpin-Valve Effect in NiFe/MoS2/NiFe Junctions.
Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been recently proposed as appealing candidate materials for spintronic applications owing to their distinctive atomic crystal structure and exotic physical properties arising from the large bonding anisotropy. Here we introduce the first MoS2-based spin-valves that employ monolayer MoS2 as the nonmagnetic spacer. In contr...
متن کاملGiant magnetoresistance of (001)Fe/(001)Cr magnetic superlattices.
We have studied the magnetoresistance of (001)Fe/(001)Cr superlattices prepared by molecularbeam epitaxy. A huge magnetoresistance is found in superlattices with thin Cr layers: For example, with rc, =9 A, at T =4.2 K, the resistivity is lowered by almost a factor of 2 in a magnetic field of 2 T. We ascribe this giant magnetoresistance to spin-dependent transmission of the conduction electrons ...
متن کاملSpin-Dependent Interface Transmission and Reflection in Magnetic Multilayers
First-principles calculations of transmission and reflection from Ag/Fe, Au/Fe, Cu/Co, and Cu/Ni interfaces show very strong spin dependence that differs significantly from expectations based on free electron approximations. The results can be used to understand both the giant magnetoresistance and the oscillatory exchange coupling observed in magnetic multilayers of these materials. The spin d...
